Charlene Reviews ... Enchanted August

Enchanted August introduces us to Lottie, a disillusioned wife, and Rose, a worn-out mom, both muddling through their lives, distressed and tired. When Lottie finds a notice for an August rental in Maine, she persuades Rose to join her, and splitting the cost with two others: Caroline, an out of work actress looking for seclusion, and Beverly, a color blind curmudgeon that recently lost his lover, they find themselves in a whole new world with no begrudging duties for a whole month.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was light and sweet and had just the perfect amount of happily-ever-after. The characters were delightfully flawed, and carried such realistic emotion that I felt personally attached to them by the end of the book. Although it was a bit easy to know where the plot would lead, it took nothing away from the story and I found myself wishing the story continued past their return to "real" life.

The writing painted an exquisite picture of the island, so much so, that you could almost smell the lobster bake and salt air. I was fully immersed from the first chapter and look forward to reading more from Ms. Bowen.
